Sweet Charlottes to Host Preschool Open House and Networking Event

A “Spring into Summer” evening highlighted by a unique networking event, a preschool open house and a basket raffle will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Sweet Charlottes, 10255 Main St., Clarence.

“Sweet Charlottes is a space for children of all ages and abilities to play, explore and experience,” said the facility’s owner, Molly Pitman. “In addition to offering open play, babysitting services and an all-inclusive pre-school program, our overall mission is to raise awareness about support services for families affected by autism by donating a percentage of all proceeds to Autistic Services and other like-minded organizations.” The Pitmans are the parents of two children, including a son Donovan who was diagnosed with autism at 23 months.

Daemen College has been selected by University Research and Review as a 2017 Best Value School award recipient, making it one of fewer than 100 institutions across the country selected to receive this prestigious national designation.

“We are honored to be chosen for this distinguished award and to be recognized for our exceptional educational value,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “With college costs currently at the forefront of New York State higher education, this distinction attests to the affordability, high quality, and academic excellence of private colleges like Daemen and is indicative of our rising national status.”

One of only three colleges in New York State named among this year’s honorees, Daemen joins other notable institutions such as Ohio Northern University, Mercyhurst University, Benedictine College, and Mount Aloysius College.

Annunciation Strong Start Pre-K Program to Host Open House

The Strong Start Early Learning Academy at the Church of the Annunciation will host an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22 at the school, located at 7580 Clinton St., Elma.

For the 2017-18 school year, Annunciation will again offer a two-day Pre-K3 program from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and a three-day program Tuesday through Thursday. The Pre-K4/5 program will continue to be offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Annunciation also offers a “Mommy & Me” program for children 18 months to 3 years from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays.

Experts to Discuss New Refugee and Immigration Policies

President Donald Trump’s refugee and immigration policies, including a travel ban from several Muslim-majority countries, will be discussed by a panel of experts from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 4 in Daemen College’s Wick Campus Center Social Room.

The panel discussion, “The Myths and Realities of Trump Policies on Refugees and Immigrants,” will examine the new administration’s policies, the controversial travel ban barring refugees from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. and its impact on area refugees, protecting refugee and immigrant rights, and strategies to address the policies.

Daemen’s Accounting Degree Ranked Nationally Among Small Colleges

Daemen College has been ranked in the top five nationally on the “25 Best Value Small Colleges for an Accounting Degree” list released by Best Value Schools, an online guide to the best values in college education in the country.

Daemen earned the No. 4 spot as one of the top-ranked schools on the list, which includes small four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. with 3,000 or fewer students. Colleges listed offer at least two relevant programs for students seeking a bachelor’s degree in accounting and are ranked based on overall undergraduate graduation rate and affordability.

Dog Ears Bookstore Seeks Teachers and Educators to Develop Literacy Programs

Want to be part of the Dog Ears Bookstore family and improve literacy in our community? The nonprofit community bookstore is looking for current and retired teachers and educators to help out with current programs, design and implement their own and be part of the bookstore’s mission.

Dog Ears will host an informative and exploratory gathering at the bookstore, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 to discuss how to serve all members of our community in a positive, educational and imaginative way. All ideas are welcome!

“Some ideas we are looking to fill our schedule with are kids programs, book clubs, story telling, computers for all ages, book-based meetings and any literacy or literature ideas you may have,” said Dog Ears Director Thomas McDonnell. “Come be part of something big, positive and exciting!”

Buffalo Bills and M&T Bank Kick Off Touchdown for Teachers Contest

Western New Yorkers asked to nominate outstanding educators in their community

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — For the 9th consecutive year, the Buffalo Bills and M&T Bank are calling on fans to nominate Western New York’s “Hall of Fame-caliber” educators for the 2017 M&T Bank Touchdown for Teachers program, which recognizes local teachers for extraordinary service to their schools and communities.

This year, the Bills and M&T are hoping to gather the most nominations in the program’s history. To make it happen, they’re challenging each of the schools throughout the 15-county region that is eligible for the competition to nominate at least one of their outstanding teachers.
