Artistic Good Neighbor

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - The ability to speak your mind is easily taken for granted by most of us, but it's a luxury for some people living with disabilities. Larry Deskiewicz has Cerebral Palsy. The brain and nervous systems disorders may limit his movement, but not his imagination. You can see his ideas through his artwork.

Larry's been painting for more than 20 years. He gets an idea, then finds pictures to help him share it with others. He uses a special helmet with a long paint brush mounted on it to translate the idea onto canvas. Each stroke requires overcoming a series of obstacles. His focus, determination and talent inspire others.

Aspire of WNY iXpress Art Facilitator Sarah Sonnenberg says, ""As an artist myself, I'm blown away every single day by what people can do."
Larry is very modest about his artistic talent. He says he doesn't like anything he paints, but he likes to see other people's reactions. He especially likes to see how much people bid for the pieces he donates. He's proud that one sold for $3,000. The money goes back to the iXpress program to buy canvas and supplies.

Amy Holdnack with Aspire of WNY says, "Just like anything, the more you contribute to it, the more you're going to get out of it. I think Larry realizes that and he enjoys it and he knows the value of that."

About 100 people participate in the iXpress program and benefit from the journey of creating something unique through the arts. More work will be featured at Aspire's Art and Wine event on June 6th. You will likely see more of Larry's work then because he plans to keep painting. He says it helps him relax.
