CHEEKTOWAGA, NY- Cheektowaga Police are investigating an accident that sent three children to the hospital.
The accident happened around 3:30pm on Genesee Street near East Grand Boulevard.
Officials say a Ford Focus collided with a Ford F-250 pick-up truck. The impact crushed the back seat of the vehicle.
Three children in the car were taken to Women and Children's Hospital. Their conditions are unknown, although, as of 9pm Friday, police said the children were still alive. One of the children, according to witnesses, appeared to be seriously hurt.
"I was in my kitchen, and I heard a screeching noise," said Jon Bova, who lives next door to the site of the crash. "By the time I got here, it was just chaos already. There were people all around, little kids were screaming. There was a woman screaming. It was pretty, pretty crazy."
The woman, according to police, was driving the car. The male driver of the pick-up truck was not seriously hurt. Witnesses said he appeared distraught.
"When I arrived it looked very frightening," said Lt. Steven Berecz of the Cheektowaga Police Department. "That's why we're airing on the side of caution and reconstructing the accident the way we're doing."
According to witnesses, a doctor and nurses from a pediatrician's office across the street raced to the scene to treat the children.
"It was chaos," Bova said. "Actually, Dr. [Eric] Sickles, my daughter's pediatrician, whose office is right here, actually ran across the street and started rendering assistance to the children."
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
