Gabryszak: Law-Breaking Public Employees Shouldn't Receive Pensions, Benefits

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - Assemblyman Dennis H. Gabryszak (D-Cheektowaga) recently sponsored legislation (Bill No. A03773) that calls for the forfeiture of pension and retirement rights of public employees who commit serious crimes.

This legislation is an attempt to amend the social security law by adding a new article entitled the Forfeiture for Public Misconduct Act.

“Illegal behavior shouldn’t be tolerated; breaking the law is a violation of public trust,” Assemblyman Gabryszak said. “If a public employee commits a crime, it isn’t fair for law abiding tax payers to have pay for them. Pensions and benefits are not an entitlement, they are a privilege.”

“Just because someone makes the law, it does not mean they’re above it,” said Assemblyman Gabryszak.  “This legislation will serve as a watchdog for New York State taxpayers and a warning for public employees. An elected official or public employee should serve with the trust of the taxpayer.”
