Great Kid: 5 Year-Old Raises Money to Fight Cancer

When 5 year old Emma Newman heard about her cousin's fight against breast cancer, she started two fundraisers to help with her medical bills.  Sarah was diagnosed at age 29, and urges other young women to examine themselves and consult with their doctors if they feel or see an abnormality.

Number Of Under-Performing Schools, Districts Grow

Gannett Albany Bureau

ALBANY - The state Education Department's annual list of under-performing schools includes 532 schools and 35 districts statewide, of which 99 schools and four districts are newly identified.

The number of problem schools is higher than the 499 identified at the beginning of the 2009-10 school year, although the number of districts has remained the same, according to the Education Department, which released the list Thursday. There were 49 schools and three districts that were new to the list issued a year ago.

This year's increase comes after a change in the calculation of adequate yearly progress - a standard under the federal No Child Left Behind Act - for students with disabilities, and time adjustment of assessment cut scores because state tests were given later this year.

Food Bank of WNY Partners with Nickel City Roast Coffee from NOCO Express

Throughout November and December, NOCO Express Stores will donate ten cents from every cup of Nickel City Roast Coffee sold in-store to the Food Bank of Western New York.

“If each customer were to purchase one cup of coffee each day through the end of the year, they would be providing 34 meals to those in need right here in Western New York,” said Terry Messmer, director of merchandising, NOCO Express. “We are proud to partner with the Food Bank of Western New York this holiday season to support such a deserving cause.”

The Food Bank of Western New York collects and distributes food to its 400 member agencies in Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, distributing one million pounds of food per month, assisting 100,000 people in need.

"Safe" Return... to Slaughter?!

For me, the word safe return has several obvious implications. Mainly that the animals are safe. Now pair that word with slaughter house, and I'm not sure how the two can even be in a sentence together. Were my dog to run away, his safe return to me would mean that not only was he okay at the time of his return, but that he would remain safe. Safe implies that care is taken to keep something well, at a slaughter house I imagine the only care taken is not to bloody one's socks, should their boot fill with the blood of an animal as it's hung from it's back legs, neck slit, and the blood pours.

Dear Tom,

I own a 2006 F250 4x4 Ex Cab with a 6.0 L Diesel. What are your thoughts on the chip tuners such as Bully Dog and Super Chips? Are they worth the investment?
