Gabryszak: Threats Should be Taken Seriously

"Over the weekend, many of my colleagues received an anonymous email that directly threatened their lives, expressing his or her discontent with the budget and lawmakers. Any direct threat to someone should be taken seriously, especially with the tragedy that occurred in Arizona with Congresswoman Giffords, members of her staff and the public.

“Violence is never the answer in any situation and threatening someone’s life is unspeakable.  The state legislature is having authorities investigate this matter and I believe the author of this email will be found and justice will be served.

“I have had received threats in the past and it was worrisome to think that someone would want to put any family, including mine, in danger.

Gabryszak: Assembly Strengthens Protections and Rights for Domestic Violence Victims

Gabryszak: Assembly Strengthens Protections and Rights for Domestic Violence Victims

Domestic violence is a heinous crime that often leaves victims feeling defenseless and without a voice to stand up to their abusers. Recently, I supported and helped pass a package of bills that would not only strengthen the protection of domestic violence victims, but bring about justice to their abusers. The legislation provides domestic violence victims and their families with essential resources for their safety and to help get their lives back on track.

It has been a priority of mine to support measures that protect Erie County’s abuse victims, defend the rights of victims and reduce the incidence of abuse and assault. Legislation recently passed in the Assembly strengthens the law to enact tough measures to deal with abusers.

Bishop Kmiec Delays Merger of Kaisertown, Cheektowaga Parishes

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec has informed members of St. Bernard Parish in Buffalo’s Kaisertown neighborhood that he has decided to delay the pending merger with Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Cheektowaga.  Parishioners were informed of the decision at weekend Masses (Apr. 2-3).  Earlier this year, the bishop was considering a proposal to merge St. Bernard and Our Lady of Czestochowa, with the St. Bernard site to be closed.

“For a limited time, St. Bernard’s will remain a parish community,” Bishop Kmiec said.  “Given the demographics of the area and diocesan pastoral needs, this decision will be revisited in the fall of 2012.   Hopefully, this will give added time to see if the trends of decline of the parish can be reversed.”

Father Francis Chmielewski, temporary administrator of the parish, was named pastor of St.

"The Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) program has area
helped area senior citizens, who are on fixed incomes, to be able to
obtain affordable prescription medicine.  Many difficult cuts were
made due to the $10 billion gap in the budget; however, we should not
make seniors suffer because of this. I fought hard and will to fight
to protect access to affordable, quality healthcare for seniors.

"The restoration for the 2011-12 totaled $22.3 million—65
